A HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION, & THE LAW
The New York State Science and Technology Law Center (NYSSTLC) has been a leader in technology commercialization for more than a decade. Since its inception, NYSSTLC has assisted hundreds of companies and institutions in their quest to commercialize emerging technology.
NYSSTLC is housed in the Syracuse University College of Law’s Innovation Law Center (ILC). Established in 1990 as the Technology Commercialization Law Program, the ILC was the first law program of its kind in the country to combine science and technology development with practical legal analysis, research on intellectual property law, and hands-on experience for students.
In August 2004, Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) recognized the unique value and economic contributions of Syracuse University College of Law’s technology commercialization programs and established the New York State Science and Technology Law Center. The mission of the NYSSTLC is to facilitate New York State’s economic development by leveraging the experience and expertise of law faculty and students to assist New York businesses and institutions in delivering emerging technology to the marketplace.
NYSSTLC’s diverse, experienced, and highly educated team of faculty, students, and staff focus on intellectual property assessment, patent protection, market landscaping, and other commercialization matters for companies of all types and industries.
In addition to leveraging the skills and energy of Syracuse University College of Law students to create customized, proprietary reports for clients, NYSSTLC also partners with the Martin J. Whitman School of Management’s Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises Program (EEE), students of which often join NYSSTLC teams to provide the reports’ market landscapes.
The student teams—supervised by experienced technology commercialization professionals—also create regulatory landscapes to help get products and devices to market.
